The 5 Tests Every Dress Shirt Should Pass. Most fail the Last one.

I used to judge shirts by the label and the price.

Then I spent €292 on one and found myself doing the same things I did with every other shirt: iron it, fix the collar, wear an undershirt, re-tuck it every time I moved.

At some point I realized how ridiculous that was.

So I wrote down the five things that made me regret buying a shirt after actually wearing it.

Then I put all 12 of my shirts through the same five tests.

Only one passed all five.

1. I could raise my arms without re-tucking it.

This sounds small until you notice how often you fix your shirt.

Most of mine pulled out of my waistband the second I reached for something.

With the Azzurro, the fabric moves with me and stays where I tucked it. After a couple of weeks, I realized I'd basically stopped checking it.

2. It fit my chest without a parachute at the waist.

This is where most shirts lost me.

If I bought the size that fit my shoulders and chest, I had a box of extra fabric around my stomach. If I sized down, the arms got tight.

This one sits close through the chest and shoulders, then gives me room through the middle.

Fitted. Not painted on.

3. It doesn't show that you're sweating.

I sweat. That's not the problem.

I just don't want my shirt showing everyone exactly where.

On warmer days, I realized the Azzurro didn't get those obvious dark patches the way my cotton shirts did. I even stopped wearing an undershirt under the white one.

That was a bigger deal than I expected.

This was the point where I stopped expecting the same story.

4. I stopped worrying about ironing it.

I used to assume ironing was just part of owning a dress shirt. Sit in the car, pack it in a bag, wear it for a few hours... eventually it looked creased.

With this one, it relaxes back into shape.

I haven't ironed mine since I got it. That's probably the simplest way I can explain the difference.

5. The collar still looked good at the end of the day.

I've tried so many other well-known brands before.

They're comfortable, but by dinner the collar usually looks tired.

The Azzurro was the only one that got the balance right for me: structure in the collar and cuffs, stretch everywhere else.

I can wear it open with no tie or jacket and the collar still sits where it should.

My one hesitation: "would it look like a gym shirt?"

Honestly, this was the part I expected to hate.

A lot of stretch shirts look shiny, thin or obviously synthetic. You can tell what they are from across the room.

This one doesn't.

The fabric is matte, the collar and placket look like a proper dress shirt, and there's no logo screaming from the chest.

It just looks like a really good shirt.

The test you can’t run in a shop.

Most of my old shirts started showing problems before 10 washes. Pilling after a cycle or two. Fading. A collar losing its shape. Sometimes the whole shirt would come out slightly smaller and never fit quite right again.

Mine has now been through 100+ washes without shrinking or losing its shape. The collar still stands and I still reach for it.

In the end, that mattered more to me than anything I noticed on the first day.

About that €292 shirt...

This is the part that annoyed me most.

I paid €292 for that shirt. For roughly a third of that, I got three Azzurros.

After wearing both, I genuinely looked at the €292 one in my closet and thought, why am I even keeping this?

I almost threw it out.

Not because €292 suddenly makes it a bad shirt. I just prefer wearing the Azzurro.

I stopped caring which name was on the label. I just kept wearing the shirt that worked better for me.

Run the five tests on whatever you're wearing right now. If it passes, keep it.
